What is the difference between desmosomes and plasmodesmata?

Desmosomes also called as macula adherens are structures (junctions) that join adjacent cells together. They are spot-like adhesions randomly arranged on the lateral sides of plasma membranes. They are common in epithelia (e.g., the skin)

Plasmodesmata are tiny pores present on the cell wall of plant cell. These connect cytoplasm of neighbouring cells enabling transportation and communication between them. They are common in plant cells.
