What is the difference between Electro plating,Electro refining and Electro lysis???

1) The process of depositing a layer of any desired metal on another material by means of electricity is called electroplating. It is one of the most common applications of chemical effects of electric current. The metal to be electroplated is made the cathode, while the anode is the other metal which has to be deposited on this metal. After passing electric current through the electrolyte, the metal from the anode is deposited on the cathode.

2) Electrorefining is the process of refining a metal in an electrolytic cell, in which an impure metal is used as an anode and the pure metal is made the cathode. On passing current through the electrolyte, the pure metal from the anode is deposited on the cathode. The impurities deposit below the anode as anode mud.

Thus. the electrode reactions are,

at the anode: M → Mn+ + ne-

and at the cathode: Mn+ + ne- → M

3) Electrolysis is the process of separating a compound into its constituent elements by passing an electrical current through it when in a molten or aqueous state. The word electrolysis means the process of breaking molecules to smaller parts by using an electric current.

Thus, electrorefining and electroplating are the applications of electrolysis.

1)Electroplating is a process that uses electrical current to reduce dissolved metal cationsso that they form a coherent metal coating on an electrode. The term is also used for electrical oxidation of anionss onto a solid subtrate, as in the formation silver chloride on silver wire to make silver/silver-chloride electrodes. Electroplating is primarily used to change the surface properties of an object (e.g. abrasion and wear resistance, corrosion protection, lubricity, aesthetic qualities, etc.), but may also be used to build up thickness on undersized parts or to form objects by electroforming.

2)Electrowinning, also called electroextraction, is the electrodeposition of metals from theirores that have been put in solution or liquefied. Electrorefining uses a similar process to remove impurities from a metal. Both processes use electroplating on a large scale and are important techniques for the economical and straightforward purification of non-ferrous metals. The resulting metals are said to be electrowon.

3)Electrolysis is a method of using a direct electric current(DC) to drive an otherwise non-spontaneous chemical reaction. Electrolysis is commercially highly important as a stage in the separation of elements from naturally occurring sources such as ores using an electrolytic cell.
