What is the difference between hybrid varieties and apomictic seeds..?
explain in detail.
Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query
The crop plants obtained by cross-pollination between the pure line of plants having the desired traits are known as hybrid crop plants. In hybridization, two plants are selected having desirable traits and the anthers of one plant are removed and the pollens of desired plants are dusted on the stigma of these plants. The hybrid plants produced by this method will display desirable traits of both parent plants. The crops grown by implanting these hybrid varieties of plants are known as hybrid crops.
Apomixis is the mechanism of seed production without involving the process of meiosis and syngamy. It plays an important role in hybrid seed production. The method of producing hybrid seeds by cultivation is very expensive for farmers. Also, by sowing hybrid seeds, it is difficult to maintain hybrid characters as characters segregate during meiosis. Apomixis prevents the loss of specific characters in the hybrid. Also, it is a cost-effective method for producing seeds (Apomictic). Two ways in which apomictic seeds can develop are :-

1. From the unreduced egg cell which develops into the embryo without fertilization.
2. The surrounding part of embryo sac, the nucellar cells which are diploid, develop into embryo inside embryo sac. Thus, in this case also embryo develops without undergoing reductional division (meiosis) and fertilization.
Hybrids often have beneficial characteristics which allow them to survive in adverse conditions. Plant hybrids are often pest-, disease-, and drought- resistant. Fruits of such hybrids are more nutritious and have longer shelf-life and thus can be transported to far off distances without perishing.
