what is the difference between leaded and unleaded petrol?

Hi,

The petrol containing lead compounds (principally tetra ethyl lead or TEL) is known as leaded petrol. Tetraethyl lead was added to petrol as an antiknocking agent to enhance the performance of the vehicle. However, the exhaust from such vehicles was found to contain lead. Lead is a very toxic metal that causes damage to the central nervous system.

Unleaded petrol is petrol in which this anti-knocking substance is not added that is the petrol that has been not been treated with the lead compounds is called unleaded petrol. Unleaded petrol does not release lead compounds to the atmosphere from exhaust fumes and causes less pollution. The petrol which is normally used these days is unleaded petrol.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!
