what is the difference between Robertson and nicolson's model of cell membrane?

Dear student,

Robertson in 1953 proposed the unit membrane hypothesis according to which the cell membrane shows a trilaminar structure and  consists of two dark osmiophilic layers separated by a light osmiophilic layer. This hypothesis states that all biological membranes  this generalised unit membrane construction.

In 1972, G.L. Nicolson and S.J. Singer, proposed the fluid mosaic model of cell membrane. This model states, the cell membranes are nothing but mosaics of lipids and proteins. The lipids are arranged in a bilayer and  peripheral and integral proteins are embedded in this bilayer to varying degrees.

Regards.
