What is the effect of antibodies produced in mother's blood during first pregnancy on the second child having rh+

Dear student,

If a lady with Rh- blood type gives birth to a baby with Rh+ blood type, there is no problem in the first pregnancy. Only antibodies are produced in her body. This is known as Rh sensitization.
However, in case of second pregnancy, if the lady again conceives a baby with Rh- blood type, these antibodies start crossing the placenta and start acting against the Rh factor present in the baby's blood.
As a result, the lady's immune system starts acting against the baby, which can lead to jaundice, heart failure or enlarged organs of the baby. It can also lead to erythroblastosis fetalis (a hemolytic disease).
Regards.
