Discount is a kind of reduction or deduction in the cost price of a product. It is mostly used in consumer transactions, where people are provided with discounts on various products. The discount rate is given in percentage.

Regular price minus Sale price gives the amount of discount.
If the discount is given in percent, then the amount of discount can be found by using the formula, Amount of Discount = Regular Price × Rate of Discount.

 

Example of Discount

Charlie bought a DVD player, which costs $270. But he was given a discount of $30. 
Cost at which Charlie bought the DVD player = Original cost of the DVD player - Discount offered on the DVD player
= $270 - $30 = $240
So, Charlie paid $240 for the DVD player after discount.
