What is the formula for calculating molar mass of a substance? Please help me with an example also.
Dear student,
Molar mass is the mass possessed by one mole of an element or compound or any species.
So, it is better if it is an element, then the molar mass will be equal to atomic mass (if the element is monoatomic like, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, etc.)
If diatomic or polyatomic element then, molar mass = atomic mass x atomicity
For ex: in oxygen gas O2 molar mass = 16 x 2 = 32 gm
If any compound or ionic species , then molar mass = sum of the atomic mass of all element
Ex: CaCO3 , molar mass = 40 + 12+ (16x3) = 100 gm
