The Cauvery River emerges from the Western Ghats and streams through the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Union Territory of Puducherry draining into the Bay of Bengal.
  • The maximum length and breadth of the Cauvery basin is 360 km and 200 km respectively, with a rectangular type of shape.
  • The total length of the Cauvery river is about 800 km starting from its source to the Bay of Bengal. Amongst this, 320 km lies in Karnataka, 416 in Tamil Nadu while the remaining 64 km creates a common border between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu states.
  • An area of 81,155 km2  is covered by Cauvery basin i.e. approximately 24.7%  of the entire geographical region of the country.
