It is defined as the number of times that event can occur divided by the total number of possibilities(sample set).
i.e $P\left(A\right)=\frac{n\left(A\right)}{n\left(S\right)}$
For example, what is the probability of an odd number occurring when you throw a fair unbiased dice?
Now, the sample set consists of all possible numbers from  1-6, i.e {1,2,3,4,5,6}. n(S)=6
Now, let A be the event that we get an odd number.
The set A will contain {1,3,5}. n(A)=3
Thus, P(A)=$\frac{3}{6}=\frac{1}{2}$
Therefore the probability of an odd number occurring when you throw a fair unbiased dice is 1/2.
