Summary:----
The story is about a boy that be called Ernest. In the beginning of this book he was a little boy and lived with his mother in the cottage where he was born.
Ernest was about six years old when his mother told him a legendary story about the Great Stone Face:
The Great Stone Face was a piece of Nature. Rain and wind had cut into the side of a mountain, now it looked like the face of a man. It had a high forehead, a long nose and great lips.
His mom said, the Great Stone Face looks down at the people in the valley.
The face always looked warm and sweet, like the face of an old man who loves all living things. The legendary story said that at some day a man walked down the city who was a look-a-like of the Great Stone Face. So everybody was looking for this man.
The first man the people thought who was the look-a-like of the Great Stone Face, was a shopkeeper. His name was Gathergold. He was a very rich man and he had lots of diamonds and pearls. But after a while the people in the village knew that he wasn’t the man who loves all living things.
The second man the people thought who was the look-a-like of the Great Stone Face, was a general. The people called him Old Blood-and-Thunder. This man had a strong will and a hard face, but not the wisdom and the love of the Great Stone Face. So he also wasn’t the man they were looking for.
The third man the people thought who was the look-a-like of the Great Stone Face, was a great statesman. The people called him Old Stony. But he also wasn’t the man that they were looking for, because he did not have the warm smile.
All the years passed quickly. Ernest became an old and wise man. He read books of a poet. People in the great world, outside the valley, began to know about him. He had different ideas. He was inspired by one thing and that was the Great Stone Face. He told the people of the village some important things. The people where he talked to, saw that Ernest himself was the Great Stone Face. But Ernest was still hoping that some wiser and better man than himself would appear, bearing the likeness of the Great Stone Face.
