Relationship between age composition and dependency ratio can be explained from the following:

a. The age composition impacts the dependency ratio as there are groups who are not producers.
b. These groups include children below the age of 15 who are economically unproductive.
c. They are dependent on the working population for food, clothing, shelter, medical needs.
d. It also includes people above the age of 59, who are not available for employment,it includes retired population
e. From the figure given in the textbook, 6.5 we can make out that 34.4% of children and 6.9% of aged can be regarded as dependents.
f. Higher the age composition of these groups higher would be the dependency ratio.

Age of a person determines how much he/ she depends on his/her parents or other people.Young people who are of the ages above 18 and below 60 don't need to depend on anyone fianancially(though they need emotional support) because they earn their own bread and most of them are employed.But, on the other hand, children below the age of 18 are copmpletely dependent on their parents for food, clothing and shelter.The same thing goes for the older people above the age of 60 who have retired from their jobs.So, they also depend on their young children to take care of them.

The number of dependants in a country is dependant upon different age groups. For e.g. children till 14 yrs of age are totally dependant on their parents for their needs and shelter. People in the age group form nearly 14 to 60 become independant because they are capable of earning, irrespective of the work they do and their total expenditure. From age 60 and above, senior citizens take retirement from their profession or job and depend on their savings, pensions and their children for their daily needs including medicines, proper sanitation facilities, food requirements and other needs. This way, age group determines that if a person is dependant or independant. However, it doesn't totally depends on the age group as some people in their earning age are unemployed and are dependant on others whereas many children under 10 yrs of age work to support their family's financial shortcomings.
