What is the role of cervix in the female reproductive system?

The cervix is the lower most part of the uterus and is made up of strong muscles.

Functions of cervix:

  • It allows flow of menstrual blood from the uterus into the vagina
  • It directs the sperms into the uterus during intercourse.
  • It opens widely to about 4 inches during labor, to allow the birth of a baby.
  • It provides support for the uterus.

CERVIX: IT IS LOWER,NARROW PORTION OF UTERUS, WHERE IT JOINS WITH TOP END OF VAGINA. IT ALLOW SPERMS AND MENSTRUAL FLUID TO MOVE THROUGH IT.

ITS FUNCTIONS:

DURING MENSTRUATION, THE CERVIX STRETCHES OPEN SLIGHTLY TO ALLOW THE LAYER OF ENDOMETRIUM TO SHED OUT.

DURING THE BIRTH OF CHILD,CONTRACTION OF UTERUS UP TO 10cm IN DIAMETER ALLOW CHILD TO PASS THROUGH VAGINA.
