What is the role of first trophic level in ecosystem

A food chain starts at trophic level 1 or first trophic level with primary producers such as plants. It is the basic unit. These organisms can live without feeding on any of the other trophic levels.
They only need sunlight and water which they can transform into energy. Rest all trophic levels depend on this level for energy.
