What is the role played by the children in the voyage?

The children were extremely brave and thoughtful of their father's condition. In spite of being scared themselves, they tried their best to put up a brave front. Jonathan had said to his father that he was not afraid to die if they could all be together when that happened. Sue, on the other hand had a swollen head. enormous black eyes and a deep cut on her arm but she didn't make a fuss out of her injuries at all. She did not want her father to worry about her. The children were very brave and conscientious enough to not add to the worries of their parents.
