what is the significance of heterospory

Develpoment of two types of spores is known as heterospory and the plants are known as heterosporous. Megaspores produce female gametophyte while microspore produce male gametophyte. In seed bearing plants the gametophytes produced by megaspores and microspores are very small and never released from the spores. This protects the gametophytes from desiccation which is a very important evolutionary advancement.
