what is the significance of RQ

Respiratory quotient is the ratio of volume of CO2 released to the volume of O2 taken in respiration. Value of RQ varies with substrate.

The Respiratory quotient  (RQ) acts as an indicator of which fuel (carbohydrate or fat) is being metabolized in a particular tissue to supply the body with energy.
