What is the term feudalism

Dear Student,

Feudalism is a social system in which society is divided into hierarchical social classes. The king is at the top of the social structure. Nobles of various ranks hold land from the king in exchange  for military service.

a. The very  social, legal and political organisation that feudalism holds is based on submission and incompatible to the idea of democracy.
b. Feudalism is based on submission, rendering service or offering labour to the feudal lord. A feudal society was based on privileges and not on equality of opportunities. It is referred as a social structure existing in mediaeval Europe centring around the relationship between lords who held the land and the serfs who were involved in providing labour.
c. A feudal society was characterised by class distinctions and was hierarchical in nature, a society comprising of feudal lords who enjoyed all powers and privileges , where the serfs were bound to render services to the lords and pay taxes and dues.

d. Such a system was surely not in sync with a democratic principles.

e. Therefore, in 18th and 19th centuries, political events, like French revolution marked the ending of the feudal system and popularised the ideas of liberty, equality, fraternity for all.
f. It laid the foundation of a society based on merit and not on feudal privileges.
