What is the use of electrolytes in saliva?

 

Electrolytes are present in very small amount in saliva. It helps in maintaining the pH of  mouth and neutralizes the bacteria thus protecting the bacterial decay of teeth's. The concentration of the electrolytes in the saliva is used for diagnostic purposes. For example:- If there is any variation in the  electrolyte concentration, it indicates the presence of some physiological problem in the alimentary canal of a person.
