Velamen is the spongy epidermis tissue which covers roots of epiphytic plants.it develops from the tip of root by the division of special tissue. It has a mechanical function as it protects the vascular tissue from external damages. It also reduces the loss of water due to transpiration.Examples-it occurs in epiphytic plant orchids and clivia.
