what is vermicomposte?and how can we make vermicomposte?

Composting is the process in which farm waste materials such as livestock excreta (e.g., cow dung), vegetable waste, domestic waste and sewage waste are decomposed in pits to release the organic matter and nutrients. When composting is done using earthworms to fasten decomposition, the process is called vermicomposting.

So, vermicomposting can be performed  by making a pit at a shady side to decompose organic wastes in presence of worms and some mositure.

A method of composting which makes use of redworms is called vermicomposting.

Making a vermicompost:

Dig a pit about 30 cmdeep in a place which is neither too hot nor too cold.

Spread a net or a chicken mesh at the bottom of the pit or spread 1 or 2 cm thick layer of sand as an alternative.

Spread some vegetable wastes green leaves over the layer of sand. sprinkle some water to keep this layer wet. Keep this layer loose so that it has sufficient air and moisture.

Put some redworms in the pit and cover them loosely with a grainy bagor a layer of grass.

You can give the redworms food in the form of vegetable and fruit wastes. Do not use wastes that contain salt, oil, meat, milk as food for the redworms, as disease causing small organisms start growing in the pit.

Redworms have no teeth but have a structure caled 'gizzard' which helps them in grinding food. You can mix powdered egg shells with the waste as thesewill help the redworms in grinding their food.

Observe the pit after 3-4 weeks. You will observe loose, soil like material in the pit. Your vermicompost is ready.
