What is whooping cough?

Dear student,

Whooping cough (Pertussis)
is a highly contagious disease caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis which infects the respiratory system of the infected person. Sneezing, nasal congestion, mild fever, vomiting and coughing fits are few of the symptoms of this disease. When an infected person coughs and sneezes, bacteria with the droplets come out and infect another person. Apart from cough, runny nose, fever and diarrhoea are other symptoms of this disease. It can be treated by giving antibiotics like erythromycin.

Whooping cough (pertussis) is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection. In many people, it's marked by a severe hacking cough followed by a high-pitched intake of breath that sounds like "whoop." Before the vaccine was developed, whooping cough was considered a childhood disease.
