The crofter was an old man. He was lonely as his wife had died. In his younger days he used to work at the Ramsjo Ironworks. He was a very nice and generous person. He was also very hospitable. When the rat trap seller went to his house asking for help, the crofter received him with a smile and served food to him. The crofter was in fact happy when the peddler went to his house as he got a break from his loneliness.
