What logic did Mr.Otis gives as a reason for buying the haunted.house?

Mr. Otis is the quintessential modern American man. When Lord Canterville informed Mr. Otis about the haunted house, he remarked that he will take the furniture and the ghost at a valuation. He has come from a modern country, where they have everything that money can buy: if there were such a thing as a ghost in Europe, they would have it at home in a very short time in one of their public museums, or on the road as a show. The house would give him respectability and no ghost would deny him that.

Mr. Otis and his family are an American family who do not believe in such things like ghosts and haunted houses. Mr. Otis was a very practical person and he liked to find a scientific reason for the haunted occurrences in the mansion as well. If anything, he would like to make the ghost his friend and would not, in any case be scared of it. Thus, Mr. Otis bought the haunted mansion from Lord Canterville immediately.
