What part if opuntia is modified to form spines?

Opuntia is the xerophytic plant and is found in deserts with low water availability. Leaves of this plant are modified into spine to prevent the water loss through transpiration. These spine shaped leaves do not carry out photosynthesis. Opuntia also have green fleshy stem which serve the function of water storage and photosynthesis.
