the thunderbolt received by the narrator on reaching the school was it was his last lesson of french , as the language was now abolished from the city. it came as a shock to him and he was very much saddened by the news. he suddenly started regretting his not doing his homework and also realised why were people crowded at the notice board on his way to school. in that class the narrator paid full attention to the class as not on his mind was at attention but also his heart. he wanted to learn as much as he could and never wished the class to end as this was his 'last lesson '.
