Dear student. The causes of 1857 revolt- Economic causes- The British use their power to advance the British trade and their policies led to the destruction of Cottage and small industries.Britishers imposed heavy import duties on the India rulers and on the Indian textiles. Political causes- Dalhousie introduced the doctrine of lapse policy which created a new tension. This policy refused to accept the right of adopted son as heirs. He annexed Nagpur,Satara and Jhansi through this policy. Dalhousie also refused to give pension to the ex rulers. Thus Dalhousie policies were responsible for the revolt. Administrative causes- In the new administrative system all the higher posts were reserved for the Englishmen only. The judicial and police administration were in favour of rich landlords and not the poor farmers. Social and religious causes- Indian feared that the British rule was a danger for their religion and forced them to covert their religion to Christianity. Military causes- The Indian Sepoys were paid less then the British soldier.Indian soldiers were banned to wear their caste marks. Immediate causes- The immediate and major cause of the revolt was the introduction of new rifle .The grease in the rifle was made of Pig and beef fat. This enraged the Hindu and Muslim soldiers.as this was against their religion.
