what was the condition of slave trade in 17th century

Dear student,
French merchants in the 17th century obtained slaves from the African coasts. These slaves were better known as serfs. These serfs were stamped, chained and then fastened tightly into vessels for a period of 3 months. They were transported like goods from the East Atlantic coast to the Caribbean Islands. They were denied any political or economic rights and were kept in animal-like conditions. They were sold to European plantation owners in the Caribbean Islands. These serfs were employed in the plantation of coffee, sugar, and indigo. It was in 1848, that slavery was finally abolished in French colonies.
