British Rule was purely a selfish and self centered rule in India. All the advantages which are considered to be "bestowed" upon by British was never with the motive of doing good to India, but to fulfill their business and other needs. Living standard in India fell to its lowest during British Raj. Following are the reasons for low levels of living standard and widespread poverty during British rule :

1.De-industrialization : There was substantial de-industrialization in India during British rule Finished goods were imported and raw material was exported out from India.India has always remained rich in resources and British took full advantage of this. Imported and expensive cotton clothes were imported from Lancshire which used cotton yarn exported by India.le

2.Land taxes : Maximum population of India was into agriculture under British rule. British imposed high land revenues and rural tax which forced small farmers to give up their lands to moneylenders and landlords. This resulted in widespread poverty.

3.Export of food grains : India began to export food grains under British rule. This resulted in insufficient food grains for domestic population and around 26 million people died in famines during 1875-1900.
