I dont think so theres any significance of keeping a pen in the mouth but he wore a blanket to change his cloths n to look like mc lerry .

There is a significance....he kept his pen in his mouth so that whenever Stephens came for inspection through the window.....he would se evans holding the pen like that...as if thinking
