What was the mystery attached to the blood stain?(CHAPTER 1)

The blood stain on the library floor was supposed to be the blood of Lady Eleanore de Canterville who was murdered on that very spot by her own husband, Sir Simon de Canterville in 1575. Sir Simon had survived his wife by many years and then suddenly disappeared under very mysterious circumstances. His body had never been discovered but his guilty spirit was rumoured to haunt the Chase. The blood stain was irremovable and had been much admired by tourists and others.
