Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar faced widespread disapproval of the orthodox Hindus in the society when he raised the issue of widow remarriage. He opposed child marriage and polygamy and favoured education of girl children. But his reforming zeal faced vehement opposition from the orthodox Hindus who did not like to accept the change or reform which Vidyasagar was trying to impose.
