What was the response of people, when Booker asked them to clear the land for planting crops?

Dear student

The narrator explains that his students could not see the connection between education and planting crops. Even though nearly all of the work of getting the new location ready for school purposes was done by the students, when he told them of his plan to clear some land and plant crops, they did not understand. Also, since many of them had been school teachers, they felt it was embarrassing and degrading to do such work. Hence, Booker T Washington himself led them into the woods, and started clearing the land, to show them that there was nothing degrading about manual labour. To him, it was a learning experience. Soon all of the students began to help enthusiastically and they had cleared out about twenty acres of land and had planted crops.
