What was the salt law and what was dandi march

Dear Student

Salt law: Taxation of salt has occurred in India since the earliest times. However, this tax was greatly increased when the British East India Company began to establish its rule over provinces in India.
In 1835, special taxes were imposed on Indian salt to facilitate its import. This paid huge dividends for the traders of the British East India Company. When the Crown took over the administration of India from the Company in 1858, the taxes were not replaced.

Dandi March:
  • Dandi march was an event of Civil Disobedience Movement .
  • Gandhi wrote a letter to Lord Irwin containing eleven demands which was not accepted.
  • Abolition of salt tax was one of them.
  • On 12 march 1930, Gandhiji left his ashram at Sabarmati, after a short prayer with 78 delegates. He marched 200 miles to Dandi, and gained momentum on his way as others joined him
  • On April 6, 1930 Gandhi broke salt law.
  • This sparked off a civil disobedience movement nationwide.
