a) Achievements of Napoleon:

After the fall of the Jacobin, the political instability of the Directory paved the way for the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. In 1804 Napoleon crowned himself Emperor of France. His major achievements were:
  • He bought change in military organisations and training.
  • He conquered neighbouring European countries. 
  • He dispossessed dynasties and created kingdoms where he placed members of his family.
  • He launched Napoleonic Code.  
  • He also introduced a uniform system of weights and measures provided by the decimal system. 

b) Contribution of Napoleon:
1. Napoleonic codes:  These were a set of civil codes that had to be practised by the French society. 
The Napoleonic codes included the following:
  • All privileges were abolished which were based on birth.
  • The protection of private property 
  • Everyone is equal before the law.
  • Abolish feudal system
  • Gave freedom to peasants from serfdom.
2. Napoleon brought many economic reforms such as he introduced fair taxes and a central bank to control monetary policies. 
3. He gave Church a major role in French society and also gave religious freedom to people following other religions. 
4. He abolished slavery.
5. He introduced major educational reforms such as he restarted the primary schools and promoted education for girls. 
6. He improved transport and communication
