The first Forest act was enacted in 1865, later amended twice, it provided for the following:
a. The Forest Act of 1878 divided forests into (i) reserved (ii) protected and (iii) village forests.
b The best forests were called reserved forests.
c. It restricted the entry of the villagers.
1927 Indian Forest Act based on the famous 1878 forest act that sought to define the procedure declaring reserved, protected and village forests. Its main aim has been to consolidate area under forest cover.
Government has also passed various legislation like wildlife protection act 1972,later amendments were made to this act in 1980, 1986 and 1990 to include include more categories of plants and other species
2002 Biological diversity act that sought to preserve our biodiversity.
