What were the reason of the 1857 revolt?Who were the leaders from diffrent states? Why wasn't it succesful?

The revolt of 1857 was inevitable because the economic drain by the Britishers from India effected all sections from peasants to artisans which increased the popular discontent against the Britishers .The irrational policies doctrine of lapse, subsidiary alliance that often led to territorial annexations in turn led displacement of a large number of rulers and chiefs which turned them against the British power. The interference into the religious and other social matter like Reforms such as abolition of sati, legalisation of widow remarriage and extension of western education to women were looked upon as examples of interference in the social customs of the country along with many other elements in turn created the environment for some big uprising like 1857 revolt.
