What will happen if RuBisCO has higher affinity for O2 than CO2?

Dear student
Please find below the solution to the asked query

RuBisCO  (Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase oxygenase) is the enzyme that is utilised by photosynthetic plants during first step of carbon fixation in Calvin cycle. This enzyme normally has more affinity for CO2 than O2.

However, if it had more affinity towards O2, then it will be able to fix less or no CO2 and hence no ATP or sugar will be synthesised during photosynthesis. This is also called photorespiration and is considered as wasteful process.

Hope this information will clear your doubts about the topic.
