What will happen to the plant cell if the cell membrane is replaced by the cell wall?

Dear Student,

A cell will not be able to survive if cell membrane is replaced with cell wall. The 2 main reasons are as following:

1. Cell membrane is semipermeable membrane. Therefore only selective molecules can come and leave the boundaries of a cell.  But, cell wall is freely permeable, so there will be no control over molecular traffic across the boundaries of the cell.

2. Cell membrane is metabolically active and performs various functions like cell signalling, exocytosis and endocytosis etc. These functions are possible because of the dynamic nature of cell membrane (Fluid Mosaic Model). Cell wall in plants is made up of cellulose, it is rigid and non metabolic in nature, thus these functions will be hampered.
