Rightto national self-determination means seeking the right by culturalgroups to govern themselves and determine their future development asa nation.

Theidea of national self-determination led to the formation ofnation-state. As in case of Europe after First World-War, thecountries were formed on the basis of culture they shared. It helpedthese groups to determine their future development path and to governthemselves.

Thisidea is also a challenge to the formation of nation-state as it isimpossible to have one culture in a nation-state. It is impossible toensure that each cultural group could achieve political independenceand statehood. Examples for the same could be the mass migrationsthat took place after the re-organisation of state boundaries inEurope to maintain cultural homogeneity.
