In the story 'The Ghat of the Only World', Amitav Ghosh talks about the last days he spent with his dear friend and celebrated poet; Agha Shahid Ali. The poet first talked about his approaching death to the narrator on 25 th April 2001 in Brooklyn, USA. The narrator telephoned Ali to tell him that he was coming to his apartment to pick him up. They had planned to go to a friend's apartment for lunch. Although the narrator and the poet had talked a great deal about various subjects, it was the first time that Ali touched upon the subject of death. He was scared of dying and requested the narrator to write something about him after he's gone.
