When any plant undergoes senescence, mineral ions are transferred to the growing parts such as apical and lateral meristems, young leaves, developing fruits and seeds and the storage organs by the process of diffusion and active uptake by the cells of growing regions. Elements that are most readily mobilised are phosphorus, sulphur, nitrogen and potassium.
