The poet feels that he had truly matured and grown up when he comes to understand that his mind was really his own to use in whichever way he preferred. He could produce his own thoughts that were not of other people. It is the realization that his mind was his alone and no one could intrude upon that private space that he truly feels to be the marker of adulthood.
