because the horse shoe magnet as well as every magnet have the attractions on the poles not in the middle , it could be easy to use bar magnets for thes types of use

evey magnet has its magnetic strength the stronges at the poles which are north and south of the magnet and not at the middle.

Iron filings stick mostly to the poles bcoz the poles have more strong attraction force.

As the centre part of any magnetic item is almost neutral..the poles are the most strongest points...
