When sugar is dissolved in water, why can't the individual particles of sugar can be seen?

We all know that there is space between the molecules of liquid. When we try to dissolve sugar in water, the sugar particles breaks down into even smaller particles and fill the gap between the molecules. Molecules cannot be seen with naked eye, as so the dissolved sugar cannot be seen when we dissolve it in water.
