When the load on a wie is increased slowly from 2kg to 4kg , the elongation increases from 0.6 mm to 1.00 mm . How much work is done during the extension of the wire ?

Solution:

Work done in stretching is:

W=1/2x stretching force x extension

When stretching force=2 x 9.8N

Extension is 0.6mm=0.6x

Therefore work done W=1/2 x 2 x 9.8x0.6x=5.88xJ

When stretching force is 4 x 9.8N

Extension is 1mm=1 x m

Work done W'=1/2x4x9.8x1x=19.6xJ

Now work done in stretching the wire from 0.6mm to 1mm will be W'-W

=19.6x-5.88x=13.72xJ
