where had the narrator come? why was she back?

Dear student

The narrator had come back to her old neighbourhood. Specifically, she had come back to Mrs Dorling's house at number 46, Marconi Street. Her mother had given away a lot of their things like silverware, plates and vases to Mrs Dorling, before they had to leave their house. Her mother had told the narrator, when she was a child, that she was to remember the name of the street and the house number, if they ever had to leave their own house.

Since the war had ended, the narrator was initially uncomfortable to go back, but decided to do so, to see if she could get her mother's things back.
