where is semi-colon used?

The most common way to use a semicolon is to connect two independent clauses. We eliminate the conjunctions like and, but ,etc and place a semi colon.

eg. Mary drives a mercedes ,but John drives a chevrolet.

In this sentence, there is a conjunction called but.If we eliminate the but and the comma, and put a semicolon, the sentence will be like this

Mary drives a mercedes; John drives a chevrolet.

The semicolon is stronger than the comma but weaker than the full stop.
1. It is used between independent clauses  not connected by a conjunction.
2. It is used to separate clause, particularly if the clause have internal commas.
3. It is used before such expressions as "however", "then", "moreover", "nevertheless", "hence", "thus", "for instance", "consequently", "that is", "therefore", if they come between independent clauses not connected by a conjunction.

A semicolon is most commonly used to link (in a single sentence) two independent clauses that are closely related in thought. When a semicolon is used to join two or more ideas (parts) in a sentence, those ideas are then given equal position or rank.
