Where we use to ought to

Dear Student,

The semi-modal verb 'ought to' should be used in the following the situations:
  • When a thing is desired or ideal or morally correct, Eg. We ought to eat enough fruits and vegetables every day.
  • When used to show probability or likelihood, Eg. There ought to be some good films at the cinema this weekend.
It is not used for things that are compulsory, as in the case of 'must', but it is stronger verb than 'should' in terms of moral obligation and appropriateness.
