When a substrate transfers its phosphoryl group for synthesis of ATP it is called substrate level phosphorylation. For example 1,3 bisphosphoglycerate, in glycolysis transfers its phosphoryl group to ADP which becomes ATP. This is an example of substrate level phosphorylation.
